The paper considers formation of the Geoinformation Systems Department of the State Higher Educational Institution “National Mining University”, its creation, opening and further development. Authors review education areas and specialties of students of the department, main achievements in the field of teaching state-of-the-art educational disciplines, drafting of learner’s guides and scientific developments. They specify professional functions and tasks of future specialists, places of training and study courses.
