Calculation of filtration parameters of the gas-bearing coal rock massif

Abstract:

Purpose. To develop the rapid-calculation technique for natural filtration parameters of the coal-bearing rock massif, such as gas permeability, filtration rate and gas filtration time in closed well.

Methodology. The proposed technique was based on the well-known method of the gas permeability determination by means of the method of gas pressure recovery after short-term relief and the method of stationary states changing.

Findings. The results of the numerical calculation of natural gas permeability with regard to conventional variable drainage radius and the porosity ratio of the coal-bearing rock massif are presented. The comparative estimation of the gas permeability calculation by well-known Krigman-Voloshin method and the suggested method has been carried out. The gas permeability and filtration rate has been calculated using the quasi-steady approach and the actual characteristics of the gas pressure changes in the closed well.

Originality. The proposed technique takes into consideration the influence of conventional drain radius changing and the porosity ratio. Gas permeability coefficient and filtration rate has been determined by the quantity of the stabilized mass gas flow in the closed well for the initial part of the rising gas pressure curve. Stabilized mass gas flow from the massif to the closed well depends on the stabilized gas pressure time gradient.

Practical value. The obtained results allow us to improve the determination and calculation technique of the gas permeability ratio, the filtration rate and the drain time, and to enhance the measurements accuracy and to simplify and reduce considerably the determination time of such parameters, to estimate the gas emission from coal-bearing rock massif before the gas emission intensification activities and the choice of ways and methods of degassing, and to evaluate the possibility of natural gas use as a working agent affecting the coal-bearing rock massif in order to increase the intensity of gas release.
